3 Essential Camping Survival Tips

Knowing the best camping survival tips can make the difference between a great camping trip and a miserable slog.

Over 40 million of us went camping in 2016. It has proven to be a steadily popular activity for decades.

This means that you’re probably going to get invited to go along by someone you know sooner or later.

Here are the three camping survival tips you need to make every trip a success.

1. Learn Basic First Aid

What would you do if someone slipped and hurt their leg while hiking, or cut themselves badly while cooking?

If you don’t know the answers, it’s time to find out. Learning even a little basic first aid can really help your group out.

Learning how to properly sterilize a wound with a simple alcohol rub and wrap a bandage is important. But you should also know when to call for help if someone is badly hurt.

Always remember to take a cell phone with you – just in case. And tell someone back home where you’re going before you set out.

2. Put Together a ‘Survival Kit’

Creating a survival kit is important. When you go camping, there are some essentials that you must take with you.

Don’t go overboard. If you’re not used to it, an extremely heavy pack could put you off camping for life. But you’ll always need things like a torch, dry clothes, fresh batteries, bottled water and basic medical supplies.

Oh, and if you don’t have an RV – don’t forget the tent!

Write out a checklist on your computer and print a fresh copy out each time you go camping. Or download one from the Internet--there are quite a few useful lists about. Make sure you’ve got everything on the list packed up before you set out.

This way, you simply can’t forget the essentials — which is important because there’s nothing more frustrating than being stuck in the wilderness with a bag full of canned food and no can opener.

3. Find Out Alternate Uses for Everyday Items

Many everyday items have useful alternative purposes when camping.

In a pinch, you can use loose strands from polyester socks as a fire starter. A shower curtain adds an extra layer of tent waterproofing, or as a makeshift mosquito net.

A tarp, thrown over a low-hanging branch or two, makes a great emergency rain shelter if you’re caught without warning.

And never forget to pack in yesterday’s newspaper when you go camping. If your shoes are soaked, stuff them with the old paper overnight and wake up to dry boots!
