Five Ways to Create an Authentic Backyard Campout

We all have specific camping memories that we’d like to recreate. Unfortunately, just as the weather is giving us the “green-light” for escaping, the pandemic is shutting down our normal opportunities for outdoor camping. Here are some ideas on how you can turn a sleepover in the backyard into the ultimate campout memory.

The biggest hurdle is reality. Spending time away from home is the best remedy for the routine of life. Try your best to treat your backyard like an honest-to-goodness campsite. Forget the commonplace feeling of it, and change your perspective. Take your tent outside and find a smooth, flat surface to call home for the night. If you are lucky enough to have an Aero Teardrop trailer, or camper, pull it into your lawn. Make it feel just right. If you don’t have a backyard, build a tent in your living room, or on your balcony. Be creative!

Pull out all the accessories! Lamps, lights, and more. Make it cozy inside by lining the tent floor with yoga mats, bed rolls or multiple layers of sleeping bags and cushy comforters. If you have a trailer or camper, sheet the bed, and bring out the food. If you don’t have a tent or a trailer/camper: You can easily create a makeshift shelter by tying a rope or clothesline between two trees and hanging a large tarp, blanket or canvas over top. Just make sure you have a dry place to sleep by laying a waterproof tarp underneath, then make it comfy by layering lots of blankets and cushy pillows on top.

Just make it magical: Set the scene by hanging lamps or stringing lights around the site. I know once you experience one night of camping at home, you will do it multiple times this season.

Make a fire! One of the best parts about camping? The campfire! Smelling the smoke mixed with food, and nature, as you tell ghost stories, sing a song, or just connect face- to-face with your loved ones. If you have a fire pit, it’s easy to roast hot dogs, toast marshmallows, and even cook up meats and veggies in foil packets. The internet is full of wonderful camping recipes.

Capture the memory: As you enjoy the evening outdoors, please don’t forget to snap those pictures! You will be able to go back at any time and remember the fun moments you created, and you can use them to win a great prize!
