The 5 Coolest Hiking Trails in Washington

Hiking trails in Washington may not make the rounds on Pinterest as often as the famed trails of Utah or Colorado. But that’s not because they’re not epic.

Didn’t realize there is gorgeous hiking to be done in Washington? Or maybe you’re not sure what picture perfect trail to start on?

Don’t worry. We’ve got you covered!

Here are 5 of the coolest hiking trails in Washington.

1. Wallace Falls Trail

This moderate trail begins and ends inside Wallace State Park, located over an hour away from Seattle.

It’ll take you 2-3 hours to trek the 7.4 kilometers. But it’s a great way to take a relatively easy walk and get to know some of the local flora and fauna.

Wallace Falls is an ideal trail for a picnic. But don’t forget an extra empty bottle – there’s no drinking water on the trail.

Locals say to hit this trail on an overcast or slightly rainy day to avoid the crowds.

2. Mount Margaret via Norway Pass

The Norway Pass Trail to Mount Margaret is a five-mile winding trail in Gifford Pinchot National Forest.

Mount Margaret is a good option for hikers who are interested in experiencing the devastation wrought by Mount St. Helens in 1980 without facing off with the crowds that dominate its peaks.

It’s not hard to see why this is one of the most rewarding hiking trails in Washington.

On a clear day, you’ll feast your eyes upon many of the Cascade peaks, including Mount St. Helens, Mount Rainier, Mount Hood, Mount Adams, Mount Jefferson, and Goat Rocks.

3. Killen Creek to High Camp, Mount Adams

Not far from #2, hikers keen for a different vantage point can embark upon the Killen Creek to High Camp Trail to Mount Adams.

Here is a 9.6 mile out and back loop through Washington’s backcountry.

Head down this path and you’ll run straight into some glaciers and likely some mountain goats.

It’s also another great place to score some views of Mount St. Helens – without the crowds.

4. Chain Lakes Loop Trail

Head out to Bellingham for the Chain Lakes Loop Trail.

A quick 8-miles out and back will guide you through all Washington has to offer.

You’ve got incredible mountain views of Baker and Shuksan. There are ice-cold alpine lakes to swim in.

Rumor has it that blueberry season provides hikers with trail snacks – free of charge.

5. Cascade Pass Trail Is One of the Coolest Hiking Trails in Washington

The 5th trail on our list is a doozy – but none of the others even begin to compare.

Hikers are slapped in the face with amazing views before even hitting the trail, which is just as well because you’ll encounter 30-something switchbacks in the first few miles.

Enjoy everything the pass has to offer – and it’s a lot! But protect it for future generations by keeping your food to yourself. Don’t feed the chipmunks.

Every trail on this list is tempting. And there’s no reason not to hike them all.
